Managing Our Digital Filing Systems
Okay, we have our paper filing system in place, now what do we do with our digital files?

There is so much to keep track of, we can't physically touch it, and it all usually gets saved into My Documents. Forget about navigating to a file. We're talking desktop search feature for the win (FTW)!

Google Voice and Google Chatback

Wishing you much peace, happiness and success,

One of the biggest expenses any business has - aside from investments in personnel - is communication.

It can cost a lot to host toll-free numbers for customer care and outbound lines for following up on leads.

  1. Replace Your Forwarding Service.
You can forward your calls to whatever phone. You can have it display your Google Voice number on your caller ID so you will know to answer professionally.

  2. Act As A Message System.
Forward your office, home or mobile phone calls to your Google Voice number afterhours or set up a "call to hear a message" system.

  3. Make Free Outbound Calls.

  4. Use any phone to call your Google Voice number and place a call.

  5. Make Free Inbound Calls.
Don't let toll charges get in the way of your best customer contacting you.

  6. Create Embeddable Promotional Audio.
Call yourself and leave up to a 3 minute message. You can then download it or embed it wherever you'd like.

Yes, it's free. Yes, there may be a few branding tweaks we cannot

make. However, with Google Voice, the potential can potential outweigh the drawbacks.

Wishing you much peace, happiness and success,
There a ton of free blog-centric tools out there, but loading up your blog with all of the free tools you find can be a recipe for disaster.

It is so tempting to add things like visitor counters, cute backgrounds, sick fonts, and a plethora of totally adorable dancing pet gifs. Without realizing it, our pages become cluttered and our bandwidth usage threatens to bring down our host's servers!

To get the most out of any tool, we have to be selective. Even a free blogging tool can wind up costing you dearly in the long-term.

It is a great idea to learn about all of the kinds of free blogging tools that are available so that you can make an informed decision about what to add to your blog, but try to remember that just because you can have something doesn't mean that you need it. Practice restraint and only choose the options that you think will really be useful.

If you can find out how many visitors are reading your blog by checking your traffic statistics,a visitor counter is likely to add unnecessary clutter to your page.

If your blog is text-based, a flashy background can be more of a distraction than an benefit. Be realistic about assessing what kinds of blog accessories will help you realize your vision and improve your site.

Getting Over "Overwhelmed"
We all know what it's like to try to balance it all, don't we?

Have you ever gotten frustrated trying to explain something to someone and wished they could just see your screen?

Before that frustration happens again, you may want to take a look at "JoinMe: Instant screen sharing. Instant Aha!".

Getting Started

Getting started with is so easy even a caveman could do it. Since registration isn't required, all you do is go to their website and click on the orange arrow to share.

JoinMe

It will download an .exe that you click on to launch the service. Your screen will go dark for just a bit and voila! You are ready to share your screen.

That's it?

Well, you do have to copy your "room" URL to share with someone and somehow get that link to them but otherwise, yeah, that's it!

Features

Sometimes the free stuff is so watered down that it's not worth the effort to actually use it. Not with JoinMe.

JoinMe Features

After trying their service, we signed up for the free trial of the Pro version (which requires registration) because we wanted to see if it really worked like they say it does.

How We Are Using It

JoinMe is powered by the folks at LogMeIn, another service we totally love and highly recommend, so we knew it would be awesome right off the bat.

We just didn't realize how many ways we could think of using it.

We're sure there are a lot more ways JoinMe can help make life easier but these are the biggies for us:

  • Homeschool

  • Home Office

  • Training and Support

It's so much easier now to show someone how to use software, troubleshoot their computer system, brainstorm a project and even teach a class!

The Downside

Nothing is ever perfect right? In this case, we only have two somewhat minor complaints:

  1. You can't limit what part of your screen you share.
Make sure that you don't have anything loaded that you don't want to share because you'll be sharing your entire desktop. Literally everything you see on your screen, the other person will see too.

  2. You can't record the session.
This isn't as much of a big deal to us because we can use our screen-to-video capture software.

Conclusion

Sometimes life would just be a whole lot easier if you could just show someone what you were doing. Or have them show you what they are doing. Now you can. Quickly, easily, reliably and even free!

Have fun, stay safe and God bless,
CJ, Penny and Mary

Okay so technically this is not my personal video. This is actually one CJ and I made for his website.

Yeah, see, what happened is that I have a ton of footage (with an insane amount of bloopers) and am testing a few different video editors.

In other words, my video isn't ready yet.

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiaLdpiegZ4&w=420&h=315]

Sorry about the sound. It's a combo of machinery, room echo and a glitch in the audio input system.

Forget "Girl, Interrupted", I'm starring in "Remodel, Interrupted"! LOL

If you've followed me for a bit, you know I have been working on my Mom's house.

The job entails the placement of new insulation, walls, ceiling, restoring the awesome wooden floor and a few other details. Oh yeah, the outside needs to be redone too.

Sooo ... here's what happened today (pics courtesy of my son's DS):

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="320" caption="(L) Normal Ankle vs. Sprained Ankle
(R) Lifted, Iced and Medicated."]Penny's Sprained Ankle[/caption]

No, it wasn't while I was reliving my glory days as a contractor 10+ years ago. Contrary to what my camo pants may have you believer, it wasn't even while my son and I were out adventuring in the woods.

It happened when I went to rescue my Mom. (She'd locked herself out of her car 30+ miles away from home.)

Sure, I've been complaining about wanting time to just sit still and concentrate on my writing but this? This is so NOT what I had in mind.

We stuffed a new garbage bag with a spare pillow so the ice pack wouldn't ruin it. You can see my son's homeschool stuff strewn around me. It hurts to stand and write on the dry erase board I have for my son's homeschool lessons and I'm too short sitting down. Horrors! This was our best alternative.

Ironic, isn't it? I thank God I wasn't injured by tools, a utility knife or falling drywall or something. I have to admit though. I'm kinda embarrassed that I injured myself doing something simple. Walking to greet my Mom.

Have fun, stay safe and God bless,
Penny

Things are changing. Pop culture, the seasons and now this blog!

Although I'm still involved with tech and the interwebz, my work has transitioned from do-it-for-you to teach-you-how. Instead of just deleting this blog though, I've turned it into an educational podcast hosted at PoweredByPenny.com.

This small museum has interesting display on different types of sand from around the nation, a netted catwalk, a bubble area and simulated beach. The full-body bubble was a bust though because it wouldn't go past CJ's knees before popping.

Among others, there are sections on patterns, music (including playable instruments), the sea, human body, visual distortions, and telephones.

OUR RATING: 4 out of 5 Stars

We would have given the Long Island Children's Museum a 3 star rating except for two things:

  1. The complete section devoted to teaching about handicapped life and how disabilities are more "differentabilities" than actual inability to live a "normal" life.

  2. The newsroom that actually allows children to put on a simulated newscast.

Teleprompters, "green screen" technology, and working microphones kept CJ engaged for almost an hour each time. However, his "best memory" is of the catwalk.

CJ on the LICM catwalk.

As you can tell by the picture, our visit was back in 2009. When CJ was younger. If you'd like to read more recent reviews, check out the LICM page on Trekaroo.

To get more info on admission pricing, hours of operation and directions, head on over to the Long Island Children's Museum's website.

We do recommend getting a membership. Not only did we get free admission for an entire year, we got reciprocal benefits at several science and children's museums nationwide.

On the 18th of August, we stopped at the Crazy 'Bout Crawfish Cajun Cafe in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. We know the reviews on TripAdvisor are split pretty evenly between "this place rocks" and "this place sucks" but our experience was pretty good.

What We Tried

The Combo PlatterCheesy Little PieCJ's Kids MealAlligator Bites We tried the combo platter with a little of everything and had alligator bites for an appetizer. It was all good except for the white rice. It was kinda bland.

The cheesy, mini-pies were so delicious that we graciously accepted an extra one from one of our companions.

[su_pullquote align="right"]Alligator bites have the look of popcorn chicken, the texture of shrimp, and taste like – wait for it – chicken![/su_pullquote]If you like the spices that the Crazy 'Bout Crawfish Cajun Cafe uses, you can actually buy a container or three on your way out.

How Much

There were four adults and one child at our table. The individual prices gave us sticker shock (we didn't remember paying that much in that area before) but we were told it's par for the course after the BP thing. After factoring inflation into the pricing we remembered, our table's total (with tip) was pretty reasonable. It came in at just under $128. Not bad for huge plates of seafood.

Other Notes

The restrooms were clean. Our heavily pregnant server was really nice. Wish we could remember her name. Yes, we've got pictures of the food and their service was pretty good but what struck us as ingenious was their ceiling. They've painted business cards on the ceiling tiles!
Ingenious Ceiling

Later on, in Orange, Texas, we stopped at a diner (can't remember the name) that had business cards professionally applied to their tables. We must have missed the memo. In all of our adventures, not once have we seen something like this! Is this a new trend or has this been around for a while? Oh yeah, Crazy 'Bout Crawfish Cajun Cafe also serves food in fish shaped dishes or canoe-like artwork. CJ tried to buy one of the latter but no dice.

Final Verdict

Not bad but not totally impressive either. It may be that we're accustomed to South Texas fare, South Texas spices. We felt the same way about a lot of the restaurants and diners we've stopped at. All things considered, we would stop by again.

Update: Sunday, June 29, 2014

Crazy 'Bout Crawfish Cajun Cafe is a 2014 winner of TripAdvisor's Certificate of Excellence.

A lot of folks are against the situation(s) we find ourselves in. However, we as a people should not declare war on our troops!

If we had a problem with how the postal service was being run, we wouldn't attack the mailman. It wouldn't do any good. He or she is just doing their job.

It's the same with our military!

If anything, it's worse for our guys and girls in uniform because THEY bear the brunt of the horror that is war.

"Regardless of what we think of the war(s), our soldiers are just doing their jobs. Direct complaints and criticism to the people in charge."
~ Pearl 'Penny' Lane, C.P.C.

We just Tweeted this but felt it needs to be repeated. The Soula Boy military dis brouhaha is a direct indication of our times.

We can complain and gripe all we want but we're not the ones coming back with PTSD, nightmares and wounds. They don't need grief from us too.

Regardless of whether they joined out of a deep belief in defending our country, to pay for college or to have a relatively secure job (during peace time, it was secure), they are out there doing what you and I can't or won't do.

So, to every service person who reads this: thank you and I'm sorry for all the bad things you have gone through and will go through in the future. Some of us do appreciate your sacrifices.

With all that is going on in the world today, it's more important than ever to find our "happy place".

Adults and children alike are getting burned out. The constant bombardment of negative news, bad things happening and a society that's always plugged in contributes to frayed nerves and bad tempers.

If you've been alive long enough, you've definitely experienced the "I've got more/better than you do" attitude from someone.

Sometimes it's funny because we don't really care about whatever they are focusing on. If they happen to stumble upon a sore point though, their jabs can be pretty hurtful.

The next time someone insults you, puts you down or tries to act like they are better than you are for having more stuff, ask yourself these questions:

  1. Does this person's opinion really matter to me?
Is this someone you respect? Is this person reliable and a good influence? Is this someone you would like to be around or share values with?

  2. Do I really care about whatever they are talking about?
Is this convo about something that matters to you? Does this have something to do with your life?

  3. Is this in line with my values and dreams?
What is your version of success? What is your version of Golden Rule living? Would this be something you would be proud of and feel comfortable with?

Most of the time, people put you down to try to make themselves feel better about themselves.

Someone who is confident in who they are and how they are living their life has ZERO reason to try to bash you.

Mean Girls

If you've been alive long enough, you've definitely experienced the "I've got more/better than you do" attitude from someone.

Perhaps it is because I never went through high school (I went from the first semester of 9th grade to college LOL).

Perhaps it is because I had the responsibilities of an adult long before my peers did. Or maybe it's because our world has dissolved into a bunch of spineless mother truckers in the proverbial hell-bound handbasket.

Whatever it is, I've realized something. We get our feelings hurt when we forget that we don't give a crap about something. And I'll be the first to admit that I used to let myself feel hurt. A lot.

For example, the neighbor who flaunts have huge, flat screen tv's in every room of her house and a gazillion channels. She's bragging about her leather furniture, how she's remodeled her house several times and has two vehicles for herself (instead of how I've got one, Mom has one). Her point is she has more money than I do.

Thing is, I don't WANT that stuff. I would rather have a simple home, pet-friendly furniture, a reliable vehicle and the freedom to travel with my son.

Burt's Pumpkin Farm - Georgia

That woman is trying to make it seem like she's better than me because has more than I do but she's stuck in a set routine to maintain that. Not to mention the fact that she's terrified she'll get robbed.

An ex-boyfriend put me down for not having a husband/partner who is "successful" like him and for being a "poor" single mom. He's got a big truck, is married to a fitness model who just had his baby, etc. etc.

He's also an admitted cheater.

Then there are the "friends" with closet stuff they try to hide with religious perfection and the ones who try to knock you for the size of your rack and booty.

Honey, religion is just soulless, exterior action. Real faith and spirituality isn't just about showing up to church and being involved in everything. It's the state of your heart and how you treat others.

As for my boobs, don't hate me because I'm average. I know you feel like you are just boobs on a stick but heck, if you are going to manipulate people based on your humongous proportions, you've got to expect that's what will happen.

If my boobs are bigger than yours but so is my booty, well, we all have different shapes. Relishing that your booty is not as big as mine or trying to use me as a "fat friend" to make yourself feel better will only hurt you in the long run.

You don't want to hang around someone who always tries to bring you down and it's no different for me. You'll lose one of the best friends you could have ever had.

Real friends don't need to tear each other down to feel better about themselves. Real friends respect each other's differences. Real friends balance each other out naturally because they care.

When I stop to think about it, it's funny.

The key phrase here is "stop to think about it".
